The latest data from the February 19, 2026, crop reports indicates a pivotal moment for the industry as we analyze the shipping projections and actual volumes from Mexico and Peru.

Mexico has already shipped 1,098,964 boxes of irradiated fruit this season, representing a significant portion of their 2,835,603 total boxes shipped to date.

As the Mexican season ramps up toward its April peak, the projections for irradiation remain steady at nearly 4 million boxes.

This volume suggests that the industry is finally moving past the archaic "fatal flaw" of universal hot water treatment and embracing electronic pasteurization as a viable, quality-preserving alternative.

The Peruvian season, while currently projecting a total of 20.6 million boxes, is showing a 30% decrease year-over-year, which further emphasizes the need for technologies that maximize the shelf life and quality of every shipped box.

While Peru remains dominated by the Kent variety (100% of recent shipments), the Mexican market shows a more diverse mix, with 56% Ataulfo and 44% Tommy Atkins.

The successful integration of irradiation for these varieties proves that ionization is not just a niche experiment, but a scalable solution that avoids the fruit degradation often associated with heat.

At the upcoming IMO Global Mango Conference in Ponce, Puerto Rico, we will dive deeper into these figures during the Technology & Innovation pillar.

The feasibility of establishing third-party ionization facilities—which are more affordable and versatile than seasonal hot water plants—will be a primary focus for Puerto Rican and regional shippers.

This shift represents a long-overdue transition to modern phytosanitary standards that can finally deliver the premium fruit quality consumers demand.
