WW II ERA BOMB SAFELY REMOVED FROM PORT OF LONG BEACH

 



A World War II-era explosive device, believed to be a shell, was recently discovered and removed from the Port of Long Beach.  




Here are the key details:



Discovery: Construction workers unearthed the shell at Pier G during construction.  



Response: Cargo operations at that terminal were temporarily suspended.  




Agencies Involved: The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad responded and requested assistance from a U.S. Marine Corps ordnance disposal unit.  



Removal: The Marines determined the device could be safely transported and took it off-site for neutralization.  



Context: The location, Pier G, was formerly part of a major U.S. Navy base that operated from 1919 to 1997.



  

Resolution: The terminal resumed normal operations later that same day.
