PORT HUENEME VISIT PENDING

The Port of Hueneme has a specialized focus, particularly on fresh produce and Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo (like automobiles).

The major shipping lines that currently call on Port Hueneme or maintain a strong presence through dedicated services include:

For Ro-Ro (Vehicles and Heavy Equipment):

NYK Line (Nippon Yusen Kaisha)

K Line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha)

Wallenius Wilhelmsen (WWL)

EUKOR Car Carriers

Hyundai GLOVIS

MOL (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines)

For Reefer/Containerized Cargo (Fresh Produce):

Maersk (which operates its regional carrier service, SeaLand, connecting the port to Latin America/Central America)

Great White Fleet (Chiquita)

Network Shipping (associated with Del Monte)

CMA CGM (specifically through their IBVC West Coast service)

These lines use Port Hueneme for its specialized facilities, low congestion, and strategic location for distributing high-value cargo like fresh fruit and automobiles to the Western U.S. market.

However, the connection between the two ports is being significantly strengthened:

1. Sister Port Agreement: The Port of Hueneme, California, and the Port of Paita, Peru, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a Sister Port relationship. This initiative, funded by the U.S. Department of State, aims to advance cooperation, trade development, and the exchange of best practices.

2. Existing Service: The two ports are already connected by a major shipping line. SeaLand (a Maersk Group company) has had the Port of Hueneme as a call on its West Coast Central America (WCCA) service for several years, which includes Paita, Peru, in its rotation, offering a weekly service that connects the West Coast of South America and Central America to Southern California.

The Sister Port agreement is intended to leverage this existing connectivity to increase trade opportunities, particularly for Peruvian agricultural exports. The partnership is a strategic move to build a more direct logistics route for Peruvian produce to the U.S. West Coast.
