FRESH FRUIT CONSUMPTION IN USA

The most popular fresh fruits consumed in the U.S., ranked by the percentage of consumers who report purchasing them in a given year, are:

Context

This data is based on consumer surveys (such as Fresh Trends) asking respondents which fresh produce items they purchased in the previous 12 months.

Bananas and Apples consistently rank as the most widely purchased by the highest percentage of consumers.

• While the volume of bananas consumed per person is the highest, apples often have the highest total consumption volume when all forms (fresh, juice, canned, dried) are included.

Berries (strawberries and blueberries) are also extremely popular, with high purchase rates among U.S. households.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS) tracks per capita consumption using "loss-adjusted food availability" data, which closely approximates the actual amount eaten by adjusting for spoilage and plate waste.

Based on recent USDA data (typically referring to 2021 or 2022 estimates), here is the per capita consumption of the most popular fresh fruits in the U.S.:

Important Distinction: Fresh vs. Total

It is important to distinguish between fresh fruit and total fruit consumption:

1. Fresh Fruit (Loss-Adjusted): Bananas are the leader in the fresh category by volume.

2. Total Fruit (All Forms: Fresh, Juice, Canned, Frozen): Apples are often the leader here. For example, in 2021, the combined availability of fresh, juice, and processed apples was over 26 pounds per person.
